Negotiations on the change of the LAB Institute of Design's visual arts dgree programme premises of the Lappeenranta campus have started on 14.10.2024. LAB aims to complete the negotiations by the end of November 2024. The student union KOE is aware of the students' concerns regarding the possible transfer of the education to Lahti. We acknowledge the concerns raised by uncertainty, as we share them. Negotiations on the change are being conducted between the employer, the management of the LAB University of Applied Sciences, and the stewards representing the employees of the fine arts. The student representatives have unfortunately no right to participate in these. The student union KOE would like to remind that students must be consulted when decisions are made concerning them.
Thanks to the activism of the Lappeenranta Students of Fine Arts LaKu ry and the feedback collected by the association, students have been heard and the same information has been passed on by LaKu to the management of the Institute of Design. As a student union, we listen to, support and represent all students of LAB. We want every student to always receive a quality and equal education. We hope that we can now find workable and truly permanent solutions for the visual arts students, as the current premises have only been in use since autumn 2019.
The negotiations have received reactions of the City of Lappeenranta and the South Karelia Artists' Association, among others. The latter is organising a demonstration on the subject today, Thu 14.11.2024 at the Skinnarila campus.
